Over time, sediment (minerals, sand, and rust) builds up at the bottom of your water heater tank. This layer of gunk forces your water heater to work harder, reduces its efficiency, and can ultimately lead to premature failure. Annual flushing is a critical maintenance task that removes this sediment.

Benefits of Flushing Your Water Heater

This simple yearly task provides significant long-term benefits.

Improves Efficiency

Removing sediment allows heat to transfer more effectively, reducing energy consumption and lowering your utility bills.

Extends Lifespan

Sediment buildup can corrode the tank and damage components. Flushing helps your unit last longer.

Reduces Noise

Those popping or rumbling sounds from your tank are often caused by water trapped and boiling under the sediment. Flushing can quiet it down.

Provides Cleaner Hot Water

Flushing removes rust and debris, ensuring the hot water you use is as clean as possible.

Step-by-Step Flushing Guide

Follow these instructions carefully. Safety first: The water will be hot.

1
Turn Off the Power/Gas: For an electric heater, turn off the breaker. For a gas heater, turn the thermostat to the "Pilot" setting.
2
Connect a Hose: Attach a standard garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Run the other end of the hose to a floor drain or outside.
3
Let Air In: Turn on a hot water faucet somewhere in your house to allow air to enter the tank, preventing a vacuum.
4
Open the Drain Valve: Open the drain valve to let the water flow out. Be prepared for the initial burst of water to be discolored and full of sediment.
5
Flush and Refill: Once the tank is empty, briefly open the cold water supply valve to stir up and flush out any remaining sediment. Close the drain valve, disconnect the hose, and allow the tank to refill completely before turning the power or gas back on.

If the drain valve is old and seems stuck, do not force it. Plastic drain valves can become brittle and break. It's better to call a professional than to risk a flood.

Annual water heater maintenance is key to its longevity and efficiency. If you're not comfortable flushing it yourself or if your unit is due for a full inspection, contact Plumber in a Box. Our plumbing experts are here to help.
